Can you go full-time yet?

Put in your savings, monthly costs, and what you already earn from freelancing. See how long your runway lasts and the income you need to hit to make the leap.

The short answer

You’re usually ready to freelance full-time when your side income covers your monthly costs and you hold three to six months of expenses in savings as a cushion. Your runway is your savings divided by the gap between what you spend and what you earn each month. If freelancing already covers your costs, your runway is effectively unlimited.

Frequently asked questions

How much savings do I need to go freelance full-time?

A common guide is three to six months of living costs set aside before you quit, on top of freelance income that already covers most of your monthly bills. The bigger your cushion, the more calmly you can hold out for good-paying clients.

What is freelance runway?

Runway is how many months you can keep going before your savings run out, based on how much you spend versus how much you earn. If your income already covers your costs, you aren’t burning savings, so your runway doesn’t shrink.

Should I quit my job to freelance?

Only once the numbers give you room to breathe. Many people build freelancing on the side first, and go full-time when it reliably covers their costs and they have a savings cushion. There’s no prize for jumping early.

Does this include taxes?

No. This is a simple runway view. Set aside for tax separately, and check the Tax Calculator so filing season doesn’t eat into the cushion you planned.
